Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
1970's 6" royal blue, as an investment piece. I don't think I can part with the prices these are going for now? Does anyone like these?
I'm watching this one close now. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=121130733 |
Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
Well, I have 2 comments :
#1 - That is one pricey but cool revolver to own. #2 - Can't go wrong with COLT, one of the most collectible handguns in the world ! :ok: |
Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
Owned one. Beautiful action, hand-honed and smooth as butter. Shot mag loads into one inch @ 25 yards. Colt eventually stopped hand-fitting parts and their overall quality declined a bit. (BTW, Python production preceded CNC machining of parts so the guns HAD to be hand-fitted to ensure proper fit.)
They were primo revolvers. But with use, they needed to be re-timed periodically. Still, a beautiful piece of work in it's day. Have no idea what one is worth. Blue Book of Gun Values will give you a starting point. |
Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
My very first .357 Magnum was an older Python with an eight-inch barrel. Shot like gang busters when it was in time. The issue was is liked to go out of time with any heavy loads, and even then it was hard to find smiths who could handle Colt revolvers. So I traded it to a buddy for an 8-3/8" S&W 586 and some cash. That revolver is still in time. My buddy likes the Python, but never shoots it.

That guy got $1,625 out of that one. That's a lot of bread!

Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
Go to Kone's Korner in Castlewood, SD.
I believe that they have an Internet site. The owner collects pythons and has most variations on sale. They won't be cheap but it is the best place to find one as the owner searches for them throughout the country. Sincerely, Thomas PS I like the Kodiak variation of the Anaconda myself. the best |
Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
The Colt Python is the best revolver ever produced by anyone. If you are lucky, you could pick one up at a local gun show for $1,200 or $1,300. Best get a Smith and Wesson as well ... because you will not want to shoot the Colt too much. That would be too much like defacing artwork.

The Ex took it. The Colt Royal bluing is unparalleled by no one! Actually, I had two. The first one was a 4" nickel 1977. That was my first love. Unless you're counting...well, you know. |

I am no photographer (and I need to clean it), but here is mine.

Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
I have a 4" Python.....it has the most beautiful bluing on any gun I have ever seen. They are the standard against which all blued guns are measured.
I'm flat out crazy about handguns - I know it is an illness I strugle with........but I'm here to tell you - every man should own a Colt Python before they die....they are a work of mechanical art....and they will never go down in price....everyone knows they are the finest double action revolver ever produced. Sell something ...do whatever you have to do....but do try to get one at some time in this life. |
Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
You should get one. They are beautiful guns. My father owns one. He still has not fired it tho.... That price seems about what your going to pay these days, you might be able to find one cheaper if you look around.

I had no idea so many folks here have or had Pythons. Here's a picture of mine and a short story. Purchased 04/16/1979 for $444.10 including tax. Fired very infrequently through the 1980's and almost exclusively with .38 Special ammunition. Probably the most accurate and best action of any revolver that I own. In 1992 it started to go out of time and began to shave lead. I accidentally hit a female police officer with lead shavings at the local range. Back to the Colt Custom Shop for retiming, custom tune and reblue. Over a year later got the revolver back. I seriously doubt this is the revolver I sent to them for repair. Same serial number, but larger font than the original and it has the new style cylinder release. Who knows what happened. My guess is as good as yours - lost, "borrowed" or damaged beyond repair. Anyway, have it back and sits in my safe as returned from the factory since 1993.
Take care, Mod1 |
Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
The old Colts keep appreciating, odd since their revolvers (especially the Python) are crap soft and don't hold up in competition.
The older folks used to buy the perfect Colt Python barrels and screw them on Smiths, Smython. My first Python ate itself at under 1000rds of factory ammo of the day (60s), I was heart broken that the most accurate handgun extant needed rebuilt more often than a Harley. I'll save the Anaconda problems for another post.. |
Re: Got a hair up my butt on a Colt Python
My older brother had one back in the 70s. Beautiful piece, long gone now.
